Hello, AI

Recommend models for a task

recommend_models
Read-onlyIdempotent

Rank Hello, AI's tracked frontier models for a task. Same scoring as GET /api/recommend: task match 40%, Elo 35%, input cost 15%, context 10% (Elo 55%, cost 25%, context 20% when no task matches). Only rated models rank; unrated ones are listed separately. score is an ordering aid, not a quality measure.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
taskNoUse case, matched against the category names: Overall Preference, Coding & Engineering, Hard Reasoning & Science, Honest Daily Use. Examples: coding, reasoning, overall, daily.
limitNoHow many ranked rows to return, 1 to 10. Default 3.
max_costNoMaximum USD per 1 million input tokens; models above it are excluded.
providerNoProvider name, case-insensitive exact match (for example Anthropic, Google, xAI).
min_contextNoMinimum context window in tokens; models below it are excluded.

A3.7/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare readOnly, idempotent, and closed-world, so the safety profile is covered. The description adds real behavioral context the annotations do not: the exact weighting scheme, the fallback weighting when no task matches, and the caveat that 'score is an ordering aid, not a quality measure.' It does not explain what happens when filters exclude everything, which keeps it below a 5.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Four dense sentences, front-loaded with the action and followed by the mechanics and the key caveat. Every sentence carries information; no padding or repetition.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

There is no output schema, so the description carries the burden of explaining returns, and it does so partially: it explains what score means and that unrated models are listed separately. It does not describe the row shape or ordering of the secondary list, which is a minor remaining gap.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so all five parameters are already documented in the schema, which sets the baseline at 3. The description's scoring breakdown contextualizes why max_cost and min_context matter, but it does not add syntax or semantics beyond what the schema states.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource ('Rank Hello, AI's tracked frontier models for a task') and ties the ranking to a concrete scoring scheme. It is distinguishable from list_models in spirit, but no sibling is named explicitly, so the differentiation is implicit rather than stated.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines3/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

The scoring weights imply this is the tool for task-based model selection, and the note that only rated models rank clarifies a boundary condition. However, there is no explicit when-to-use/when-not guidance and no reference to alternatives such as list_models for a plain catalog.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
