Get Tripadvisor Reviews

Fetches reviews of one Tripadvisor place by its numeric place ID (the placeId returned by the Tripadvisor Search API, or the number after -d in a Tripadvisor URL), up to 20 per request with offset pagination. Filter by star rating (rating[]), month of the visit (month[]), type of visit (typeOfVisit[]: business, couples, family, friends, solo) and review language (language); sort by most recent or most detailed. A language filter also returns reviews machine-translated into that language: each review reports its language and originalLanguage. Returns searchInformation.totalReviews for the filters, pagination with the next offset and a hasdataLink to the next page (absent on the last page), and per review the title, text, rating, sub-ratings, link, date, trip date and type, tips, photos, helpful votes, the author (username, display name, profile link, avatar, contribution count, hometown) and the owner response. Use it for sentiment analysis, competitor and reputation monitoring, or hospitality datasets.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
limitNoNumber of reviews to return.
domainNoTripadvisor domain to use. The domain sets the language of the results. Default is `www.tripadvisor.com`.
offsetNoNumber of reviews to skip. Use `pagination.nextOffset` from the previous response, or call `pagination.hasdataLink`, which repeats every filter with the next offset.
sortByNoReview order.
month__NoOnly reviews of visits in these months (1 = January). Multiple values are combined with OR.
placeIdYesTripadvisor place ID, as returned by the Tripadvisor Search API.
languageNoReview language code, e.g. `en` or `fr`. Includes reviews machine-translated into it; compare `language` and `originalLanguage` on each review. All languages when omitted.
rating__NoOnly reviews with these ratings. Multiple values are combined with OR.
typeOfVisit__NoOnly reviews of these trip types. Multiple values are combined with OR.

A4.6/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations only cover the safety profile (readOnly, openWorld, non-destructive); the description adds real operational detail on top: a hard cap of 20 reviews per request with offset pagination, a `hasdataLink` that repeats the filters with the next offset and is absent on the last page, and the fact that the language filter also surfaces machine-translated reviews distinguishable via `language` vs `originalLanguage`. That is exactly the kind of behavior an agent needs before calling and cannot infer from the annotations.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded with purpose, then identification, filtering, and return shape in a logical order; almost every clause carries information. It is a dense single paragraph and the trailing "Use it for sentiment analysis..." sentence is the weakest, most reusable-sounding line, but the long review-field enumeration earns its place since no output schema exists.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

With no output schema, the description carries the full burden of describing returns, and it does so concretely (totalReviews, pagination.nextOffset/hasdataLink, and the per-review field set including author and owner response). Combined with 100% schema coverage on all nine parameters and annotation-backed safety, nothing an agent needs to invoke this correctly is missing.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so the baseline would be 3, but the description adds meaning the schema lacks: it explains that `placeId` can come from either the Search API or the number after `-d` in a Tripadvisor URL, that month/rating/typeOfVisit filters are visit-month/visit-type based, and that a language filter includes translated reviews. Minor friction: the description writes `rating[]` and `month[]` while the schema properties are `rating__` and `month__`.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

Opens with a specific verb+resource ("Fetches reviews of one Tripadvisor place by its numeric place ID") and immediately names the scope (single place, not a search). It also pins the ID's provenance to the Tripadvisor Search API or the `-d` segment of a URL, which tells an agent exactly how this tool differs from the place/search siblings.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Gives clear adoption context ("sentiment analysis, competitor and reputation monitoring, or hospitality datasets") and effectively implies the prerequisite that you first obtain the placeId from the Search API. It stops short of explicit exclusions, e.g. it never says to use the Tripadvisor place tool for details rather than reviews, so there is no direct when-not guidance.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
