Device breakdown

query_devices
Read-only

Use this when the user asks how search traffic splits between desktop, mobile and tablet. Returns per-device performance (DESKTOP, MOBILE, TABLET) over a date range. Not for the country split: use query_countries. Rows are sorted by clicks, highest first; ctr is a 0-100 percentage. Quote totals from coverage.siteTotals, or coverage.filteredTotals when coverage.scope is "filtered", not summed rows. Served from the ClickHouse warehouse when available, else the live Search Console API (see dataSource). Date range is optional: omit startDate/endDate to analyze the last 28 settled days (data lags ~2-3 days).

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
brandNoOptional. Narrow to queries matching the property's branded keywords ('branded') or to all others ('non_branded'). Needs branded keywords set (update_site brandedKeywords); see get_filter_options.
endDateNoOptional. Window end as YYYY-MM-DD (e.g. 2026-05-31). You do NOT need to know today's date or the latest available date: omit this and the server uses the latest settled Search Console date (data lags ~2-3 days behind today). Never pass null or the string "null".
siteUrlYes
startDateNoOptional. Window start as YYYY-MM-DD (e.g. 2026-05-03). You do NOT need to know today's date. Omit BOTH startDate and endDate to analyze the last 28 settled days automatically (Search Console data lags ~2-3 days). Never pass null or the string "null".
searchTypeNoSearch type: web (default), image, video, news (the News tab), discover, googleNews (news.google.com), or all (web + image + video + news + discover combined, position impression-weighted, like the app's "All" filter). Discover and googleNews carry no query dimension, so query-level results for them are empty, and no position: it reads null, not 0.web
contentGroupIdNoOptional. Narrow to pages in this content group (id from get_filter_options or list_content_groups). Groups whose rules cannot be applied as a filter are refused; get_filter_options says which.
topicClusterIdNoOptional. Narrow to queries in this topic cluster (id from get_filter_options or list_topic_clusters). Clusters whose keywords cannot be applied as a filter are refused.

TDQS

A4.7/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare readOnlyHint=true, destructiveHint=false, and openWorldHint=true, but the description adds substantial behavioral context: row sorting by clicks, ctr as a 0-100 percentage, source selection between ClickHouse and the live API via dataSource, and data lag of ~2-3 days. It also explains how to quote totals correctly from coverage.siteTotals or coverage.filteredTotals rather than summing rows, which is operationally important.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The description is front-loaded with the trigger condition and then moves into output semantics and operational caveats. Every sentence earns its place: device split, country exclusion, sort/ctr semantics, totals guidance, data source, and date defaults are all useful for correct invocation.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

Given the annotations, 86% schema coverage, and an output schema, the description is complete enough for an agent to call the tool correctly. It covers when to use it, when to avoid it, default date behavior, return ordering, percentage formatting, totals sourcing, and data-source variability.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is high at 86%, so most parameter meaning is already carried by the schema. The description reinforces the optional date range and default 28-day behavior, but those details are also present in the startDate and endDate schema descriptions. It adds little parameter meaning beyond what the structured schema already provides.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description states a specific verb/resource action: it returns per-device performance for DESKTOP, MOBILE, and TABLET over a date range. It explicitly distinguishes itself from the country breakdown sibling by naming query_countries. An agent can identify the tool's purpose without opening the schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It gives an explicit trigger: use this when the user asks how search traffic splits between desktop, mobile, and tablet. It also names the main alternative and exclusion: not for the country split, use query_countries. This is clear routing guidance with a concrete sibling alternative.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
