Decay overview (per-period matrix)

get_decay_overview
Read-only

Use this when the user asks how queries or pages trended month by month (or week by week). Per-query or per-page performance broken down by month or week: the same matrix the app's Query Decay and Content Decay pages render (a row per query/page, one column per period). Not for a list of decliners between two fixed ranges: use find_decaying_content. Returns the top limit rows by total clicks, largest first, each with a values array aligned to periods (oldest first) for the chosen metric (ctr is a 0-100 percentage), plus a TOTALS-style per-period aggregate across all matched rows. With dimension query, rows and totals cover only the queries Google lists, not the whole site: on most properties a large share of clicks has no query row (analyze_sampling_impact measures it). Defaults to the last months complete months (through the end of last month). Served from the GSC Wizard ClickHouse warehouse when available (longer history), otherwise the live Search Console API (see dataSource). On the live API each period is read separately; truncated: true with a note means a period's read was capped or did not finish in time, and incompletePeriods lists any period that reads 0 because it was not read.

TDQS

A4.7/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Beyond the readOnly/openWorld annotations, the description discloses the data backend preference (ClickHouse vs live API), the truncation behavior (`truncated: true` + `note`, `incompletePeriods` reading 0), the per-period read cost on the live API, the default window, and the query-dimension coverage caveat. These are exactly the operational facts an agent needs to interpret results.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded with usage guidance and scope, and every sentence carries information about behavior or return shape. It is a single dense paragraph that could be split for readability, but there is no filler.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For an 11-parameter tool with an output schema, the description still usefully explains the return structure (values aligned to periods, totals row, truncated/incompletePeriods flags) and the backend fallback. Only the `search` filter and `clusterKeywords` parameters are left unexplained across all fields.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is only 27%, so the description must compensate: it explains `limit` (top rows by total clicks, largest first), `metric` (ctr as 0-100 percentage), `dimension` (query vs page and query coverage limits), and the default `months` window. However, `search` and `clusterKeywords` are undocumented in both the description and the schema, leaving a real gap.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb/resource: per-query or per-page performance broken down by month or week, rendered as a matrix (row per query/page, column per period). It explicitly contrasts with the sibling find_decaying_content, so an agent can distinguish it without opening the schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Opens with an explicit trigger ('Use this when the user asks how queries or pages trended month by month') and an explicit exclusion routing to find_decaying_content ('Not for a list of decliners between two fixed ranges'). Both when-to-use and when-not-to-use are present.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
