Commit files to GitHub

gh_commit

Commit up to 100 files in one commit: add or change ({path, content}, encoding base64 for binary, executable true for scripts) or delete ({path, delete: true}). branch is made from from (default the main branch) when it does not exist yet. In the default mode commits go to other branches than the main one (then open a pull request with gh_pull_create), except on repositories AskYourStack created or empty ones.

A4.2/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare the write/non-destructive/open-world profile, and the description adds real behavioral rules: commits land on non-main branches by default, exceptions apply for AskYourStack-created or empty repos, and a branch is created from `from` when missing. It omits that repeat calls are non-idempotent (new commits each time) and says nothing about the response payload, but the added context is substantive.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Dense but front-loaded: the verb, the file operations, and the branch/PR routing each appear once with no filler. The parenthetical parameter hints slightly break reading flow but earn their space.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness3/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a 5-parameter mutation tool with no output schema and no annotations covering returns, the description should say what comes back (commit SHA, branch ref, per-file status) and what happens if one file in the batch fails. Those gaps are notable but the core invocation semantics are covered.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

With 60% schema coverage, the description compensates well by explaining the nested file object semantics (base64 for binary, executable true for scripts, delete: true for removal) and branch/from behavior, which the schema barely documents. It adds no detail on `message` or `repo` formatting beyond the schema, hence not a 5.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource ('Commit up to 100 files in one commit') and enumerates the two operations (add/change via {path, content}, delete via {path, delete: true}). An agent can distinguish this from gh_commits (log reading) or git_push without opening a schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Explicitly routes the post-commit step to gh_pull_create and explains the branch-creation rule via `from`. The caveat is the unexplained phrase 'In the default mode', which implies an alternate mode that is never described, leaving a decision gap.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
