Write a PDF and publish it

publish_document

Turns Markdown into a clean, well-formatted PDF on the server and returns a permanent public link. Prefer this over upload_file for documents you write (guides, checklists, lead magnets, reports): only the text is sent, so it works for long, multi-page documents. Supports headings, paragraphs, bold/italic, links, bullet and numbered lists, checklists, tables, quotes, code blocks and horizontal rules. Pro plan: pass file_id to update an existing document while keeping the same link.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
tagsNoPro plan only: tags for the file, e.g. ['invoice', 'client-dupont'].
titleYesDocument title, shown at the top of the first page.
folderNoPro plan only: folder path to file it in, e.g. 'Clients/Dupont' (missing folders are created). Omit to keep it at the top level.
file_idNoPro plan only: existing file to replace (the link stays the same).
markdownYesThe document body in Markdown (do not repeat the title as a heading).
subtitleNoOptional subtitle under the title.
file_nameNoFile name, e.g. 'claude-business-ideas.pdf'. Defaults to the title.
accent_colorNoAccent color for the title and main headings, as #RRGGBB.

TDQS

A4.3/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Adds meaningful behavior beyond the annotations: the output is a permanent PUBLIC link (a real disclosure about exposure), only text is uploaded, and the supported Markdown subset defines what renders. It does not say whether passing file_id replaces the whole body or merges, nor what the response payload contains — gaps against a mutation tool with no output schema.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loads the core action and the sibling comparison, then the capability list, then the Pro-plan update path. The Markdown feature enumeration is long but earns its place by telling the agent what syntax will render; one or two phrases could still be trimmed.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For an 8-parameter mutation tool with no output schema, the description covers the return value (permanent public link), the plan constraints on optional params, and the alternative to prefer. It falls short on overwrite semantics when file_id is supplied and on any indication of what the tool returns on success versus failure.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema description coverage is 100%, so parameters are already well documented; the description largely restates the file_id update behavior already in the schema. It adds little new per-parameter meaning beyond framing markdown as the only content sent and noting Pro-plan gating, so the baseline of 3 applies.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource: turns Markdown into a PDF on the server and returns a permanent public link. It explicitly distinguishes itself from upload_file for written documents, so an agent can route correctly without opening either schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Names the alternative (upload_file) and the condition that selects this tool ('documents you write: guides, checklists, lead magnets, reports'), plus why ('only the text is sent, so it works for long, multi-page documents'). It also gives the Pro-plan condition for using file_id instead of creating a new document.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
