Search for companies

search_companies

Search for companies by name, business keywords, location, headcount or specific domains. Returns each company's domain and basics; find_company_details returns more for a domain. Uses one lookup credit for each page that has not been searched before.

TDQS

A4.3/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare readOnlyHint=false, openWorldHint=true, idempotentHint=true, and destructiveHint=false. The description adds a crucial behavioral detail not in annotations: credit consumption occurs for each page that has not been searched before, explaining why the operation is not purely read-only.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The description is two sentences, front-loaded with the core purpose and filter dimensions, followed by return value, alternative, and cost behavior. Every clause carries useful information with no redundancy.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

Given the output schema, annotations, and 100% schema description coverage, the description supplies everything an agent needs: what it searches, what it returns, when to use an alternative, and the credit cost. No critical gaps remain.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so all parameters are already documented. The description restates the filter categories (name, keywords, location, headcount, domains) without adding syntax, format, or interaction details beyond what the schema provides; thus the baseline of 3 applies.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description states a specific verb (search) and resource (companies) and enumerates the filterable dimensions (name, keywords, location, headcount, domains). It also explicitly contrasts with the sibling find_company_details, making the tool's scope unambiguous.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It names the alternative find_company_details for retrieving more details about a domain, giving clear routing guidance. However, it does not address when to use this search over other siblings like search_prospects or search_crm, so it stops short of full when/when-not coverage.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
