Ask for something closed to the person

ask_for

Requests access to something the person cannot open (a link or an address someone gave them): the people who can open it to them see the request and answer it, and the person hears back in Alcoven. It reads the same whether or not anything is at the address; for an address already open to them, nothing is sent.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
whyNoThe person's reason, in one line, in their own words.
addressYesThe § address or path the person was given, like acme/finance/q4-budget.md.
projectNoThe project's slug, from open_project, like acme. Not needed when a § address names the project, or when the person is on one project.

Output Schema

A4.1/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations only declare the mutation/no-destructive profile; the description adds real substance — who sees the request, that the person is answered back in Alcoven, that the read is identical whether or not something exists at the address, and that an already-accessible address results in no send. It stops short of saying whether the response reports delivery or how repeated asks behave.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Two tight sentences, front-loaded with the core action, with the no-op edge case last where it belongs. The second sentence is slightly convoluted ('reads the same whether or not anything is at the address') but still earns its place.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a three-parameter mutation with an output schema, the description covers trigger, audience, follow-up, and the no-op case. It leaves out what the response tells the caller and any confirmation/permission prerequisites, which keeps it from being fully complete.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so the schema already documents address, why, and project including formats and limits. The description adds only a gloss on what 'address' means ('a link or an address someone gave them'), which is a small increment over the schema.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource — requesting access to something the person cannot open — and scopes it to links/addresses someone gave them. This is clearly distinguishable from access-granting siblings like apply_access and set_access, which open things rather than request them.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It gives a clear trigger condition (something the person cannot open) and an inverse case (an address already open to them sends nothing). It doesn't name the sibling to use instead when the caller actually wants to grant access, so routing is implied rather than explicit.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
