Search Console: request indexing

gsc_request_indexing
Idempotent

Send a URL_UPDATED notification for a URL to Google's Indexing API. Additive, never deletes.

Read before using: Google's Indexing API only acts on pages with JobPosting structured
data, or BroadcastEvent inside a VideoObject. For any other page Google accepts the
notification and does nothing with it, so this does NOT get an ordinary page crawled or
indexed. The result says only that the notification was submitted, never that indexing
will happen. For an ordinary page use internal links, an honest sitemap lastmod, fewer
low-value URLs, and the URL Inspection "Request indexing" button in Search Console
(about 10 a day, by hand). Check the page with gsc_inspect_url first.

TDQS

A4.7/5.0
Behavior5/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

The description adds substantial behavioral context beyond the annotations: it is additive and never deletes, Google may accept the notification without acting on it, and the result only confirms submission rather than indexing. These details align with the annotations rather than contradicting them.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The core action is front-loaded, followed by critical caveats in a clearly marked 'Read before using' section. The length is justified by the important limitations, with no material repetition.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

Given a single-parameter tool with an output schema and annotations, the description covers the necessary caveats: applicability constraints, result semantics, alternatives for ordinary pages, and a prerequisite inspection step. An agent has enough information to decide whether and how to call it.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

There is one required parameter, url, and the schema description coverage is 0%. The description contextualizes it as a URL to notify, but it does not specify format, canonical requirements, or property constraints, so it only partially compensates for the missing schema documentation.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description states a specific verb and resource: sending a URL_UPDATED notification for a URL to Google's Indexing API. It also distinguishes the tool from ordinary indexing expectations by explaining that it does not crawl or index ordinary pages.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines5/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It gives explicit when-to-use and when-not-to-use guidance, limiting applicability to pages with JobPosting structured data or BroadcastEvent inside a VideoObject. It also names alternatives for ordinary pages and tells the agent to check the page with gsc_inspect_url first.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
