Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

With no annotations, the description carries the full burden, and it does disclose the key behavioral trait of a 0.01 USDC x402 payment and the shape of the response. However, it omits rate limits, error behavior, and any auth or wallet prerequisites beyond the bare cost mention.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

A single efficient sentence with the scope and return contents front-loaded. The marketing-style prefix 'Structured Token-Diet Digest' is slightly noisy but costs little.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

With no output schema, the description compensates by naming the returned artifacts, and the payment model is surfaced. Only pagination/result-limit behavior is unaddressed, which is a minor gap for a 1-param search tool.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100% and the single 'query' parameter already documents that it accepts an ArXiv ID (e.g. 2308.11432) or a topic query. The description adds nothing beyond the schema, so baseline 3 applies.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb (Queries) and resource (ArXiv AI/CS/math papers) and enumerates the returned fields (abstracts, authors, PDF links, BibTeX). It is clearly distinguishable from every sibling, none of which do academic literature retrieval.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

The description says what it queries but never states when to prefer it over alternatives or any preconditions for use. There is no 'when-not-to-use' or routing guidance, leaving usage entirely to inference.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
