Add records to a sheet table

napkin_tables_add_records

Adds records, each a map of field name → value. Choices by option name (a new name becomes a new option); dates as YYYY-MM-DD; people by user id; checkboxes true/false. Every problem is reported at once and nothing is written until all records are valid.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
tableYesThe table tab's name or id.
recordsYes
sheetIdYesSheet id from napkin_sheets_list.
workspaceNoWorkspace slug. Personal tokens with no default workspace MUST pass this.
approvalIdNoApproval id from a prior needs_confirmation response. Omit on the first call.

TDQS

A3.7/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

Annotations already declare non-readOnly, non-destructive, closed-world behavior. Beyond that, the description discloses meaningful runtime semantics: records are validated atomically ('nothing is written until all records are valid') and all errors are returned in one batch. It omits any mention of permissions or the 200-record cap, but the transactional guarantee is exactly the kind of context an agent cannot get from annotations.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness5/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Three short sentences, front-loaded with the core action, then input formats, then the atomicity guarantee. Every clause carries information and nothing is repeated from the schema or title.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

With no output schema, the description covers input semantics and failure behavior well enough to call the tool correctly, but it never says what a successful call returns (e.g., created identifiers or an insertion count). That is the one gap for a mutation tool with no documented response.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 80%, so the baseline is 3, but the description adds real meaning the schema lacks: the records payload is additionalProperties with no field-level typing, and the description supplies value formats (option name for choices, YYYY-MM-DD for dates, user id for people, true/false for checkboxes). It does not explain workspace/approvalId flows, which the schema already handles.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose4/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

The description states a specific verb and resource ('Adds records' to a table, per the title), which is unambiguous and distinct from add_columns or query. However, it never explicitly distinguishes itself from the closest sibling napkin_tables_update_records, leaving the agent to infer the boundary from the tool name alone.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines2/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

There is no when-to-use or when-not-to-use guidance, no prerequisites, and no routing to alternatives such as update_records or delete_records. The text is entirely about input formatting, not about when this tool is the right choice.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
