Search eBay (SerpAPI)

ebay_search

Search eBay listings live via SerpAPI (engine ebay). Returns organic_results (each with title, link, condition, price, shipping, seller and — crucially — a product_id), plus categories, related_searches and pagination. Provide _nkw (a free-text query, what you'd type in eBay's search box) and/or a category_id to browse a category. Filter by price (_udlo/_udhi), condition (LH_ItemCondition), buying format (buying_format), seller (_sasl) and more; sort with _sop and paginate with _pgn. Pass a result's product_id to the ebay_product tool for full item details. Prices are in the marketplace currency (set via ebay_domain, default ebay.com).

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
_dmdNoResult layout: 'Grid' or 'List'. Cosmetic; does not change the items returned.
_ipgNoResults per page. Allowed values: 25, 50 (default), 100, 200.
_nkwNoSearch query — anything you'd type in eBay's search box. Required unless category_id is set.
_pgnNoPage number (1-based). Default 1.
_sopNoSort order code: '12' = Best Match (default), '1' = ending soonest, '10' = newly listed, '15' = price+shipping lowest first, '16' = price+shipping highest first.
_blrsNoSet to 'spell_auto_correct' to exclude results from an auto-corrected spelling of the query.
_saslNoSeller username(s) to filter by, comma-separated.
_udhiNoMaximum price (in the marketplace currency).
_udloNoMinimum price (in the marketplace currency).
_salicNoFilter items by location, as a country code (e.g. '1' for US — see eBay location ids).
_stposNoBuyer ZIP/postal code, used for location- and shipping-based filtering.
_saslopNoHow to apply _sasl: 1 = only these sellers (default), 2 = exclude these sellers.
no_cacheNoForce a fresh SerpAPI fetch and bypass this server's result cache. Default false.
show_onlyNoExtra filters, comma-separated: Sold, Complete (sold & completed listings), FS (free shipping), FR (free returns), RPA (returns accepted), Lots, Charity, Savings, SaleItems, AS, AV, LPickup.
LH_PrefLocNoPreferred item location: 'Domestic', 'Regional' or 'Worldwide' (mapped internally to SerpAPI's numeric LH_PrefLoc codes — the words themselves are rejected by the upstream API).
zero_traceNoEnterprise-only ZeroTrace mode: don't store search params/metadata on SerpAPI. Default false.
category_idNoeBay category id to concentrate the search in. Can be used with or instead of _nkw.
ebay_domainNoeBay marketplace domain, e.g. 'ebay.com' (default), 'ebay.de', 'ebay.co.uk', 'ebay.com.au'.
buying_formatNoBuying format filter: 'Auction', 'BIN' (Buy It Now) or 'BO' (Best Offer).
LH_ItemConditionNoItem condition id(s), pipe-separated for multiple ('1000|3000'): 1000 New, 1500 Open box, 2500 Seller refurbished, 3000 Used, 7000 For parts/not working, 10 Not specified.

A4.4/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

With no annotations, the description carries the burden and does well: it discloses the upstream dependency (SerpAPI), the shape of the return (organic_results fields, categories, related_searches, pagination), that results may come from a server-side cache (`no_cache`), and that `zero_trace` is enterprise-only. It omits rate limits, quota costs, and error behavior.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

The search mechanics and the `ebay_product` handoff are front-loaded, and every sentence conveys usable information. It is dense and parenthetical-heavy, and the "and more" filter roll-call mildly duplicates the schema, but nothing is truly wasted.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness5/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

For a 20-parameter tool with no annotations and no output schema, the description covers the gaps that matter: return structure, currency semantics, caching, and the cross-tool workflow. There is nothing further an agent needs in order to call it correctly.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters4/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so baseline is 3; the description earns above that by explaining intent, not just existence — `_nkw` is "what you'd type in eBay's search box," prices are in the marketplace currency set by `ebay_domain`, and `product_id` is the bridge to `ebay_product`. It still doesn't meaningfully frame the less obvious knobs (`_blrs`, `_salic`, `_stpos`, `_dmd`).

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

States a specific verb and resource — live eBay listing search via SerpAPI engine `ebay` — and immediately differentiates from its only sibling by naming `ebay_product` as the follow-up for full item detail. An agent can distinguish the two without opening either schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

It gives concrete use conditions: supply `_nkw` and/or `category_id`, apply filters for price/condition/format/seller, and hand off `product_id` to `ebay_product`. What's missing is any explicit "don't use this for X" exclusion or cost/latency caveat when calling live versus cached.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
