Bot Appétit

The leaderboard

leaderboard

The highest-scoring sites by category, from the latest Bot Appétit scan of each site's homepage: rank, host, score out of 100, grade and a link to the full report. Call it with no category to see the top of every category, or with a category id for that board. Only sites that were scored on the current rules are ranked; a site that blocked our scanner is never ranked.

Input Schema

NameRequiredDescriptionDefault
limitNoHow many sites to return per category (default 10 for one category, 5 for all).
categoryNoA category id such as "software" or "news". Leave out for the top sites of every category.

TDQS

A4.1/5.0
Behavior4/5

Does the description disclose side effects, auth requirements, rate limits, or destructive behavior?

With no annotations, the description carries the full burden and does a lot: it discloses the data source and freshness ('latest scan of each site's homepage'), the field set returned, and two substantive filtering rules (current-rules-only ranking, blocked scanners never ranked). It stops short of stating caching behavior, how an invalid category id fails, or result ordering beyond 'highest-scoring'.

Agents need to know what a tool does to the world before calling it. Descriptions should go beyond structured annotations to explain consequences.

Conciseness4/5

Is the description appropriately sized, front-loaded, and free of redundancy?

Front-loaded with the resource and the returned fields, then the call modes, then the ranking caveats. Three tight sentences with no filler, though the trailing clause about blocked scanners partially repeats the 'current rules' point.

Shorter descriptions cost fewer tokens and are easier for agents to parse. Every sentence should earn its place.

Completeness4/5

Given the tool's complexity, does the description cover enough for an agent to succeed on first attempt?

A two-parameter, read-only lookup with no output schema, and the description compensates by naming the return fields and the ranking exclusions. Only the discovery path for valid category ids is missing, which is minor for a tool whose defaults make the parameter optional.

Complex tools with many parameters or behaviors need more documentation. Simple tools need less. This dimension scales expectations accordingly.

Parameters3/5

Does the description clarify parameter syntax, constraints, interactions, or defaults beyond what the schema provides?

Schema coverage is 100%, so both parameters are already documented with defaults and bounds, making 3 the baseline. The description reinforces the omit-vs-supply semantics of `category` but adds nothing about how an agent discovers valid category ids, which is the one real semantic gap left.

Input schemas describe structure but not intent. Descriptions should explain non-obvious parameter relationships and valid value ranges.

Purpose5/5

Does the description clearly state what the tool does and how it differs from similar tools?

Names the exact resource (highest-scoring sites by category) and enumerates the returned fields: rank, host, score out of 100, grade, report link. The provenance clause ('from the latest Bot Appétit scan of each site's homepage') separates it from per-site siblings like get_report and page_history, so an agent can place it without opening any schema.

Agents choose between tools based on descriptions. A clear purpose with a specific verb and resource helps agents select the right tool.

Usage Guidelines4/5

Does the description explain when to use this tool, when not to, or what alternatives exist?

Gives explicit call guidance: 'Call it with no category to see the top of every category, or with a category id for that board.' That covers both parameter modes cleanly, but no alternative tool is named and no conditions for preferring list_sites or a site-specific tool are stated.

Agents often have multiple tools that could apply. Explicit usage guidance like "use X instead of Y when Z" prevents misuse.
